Knowledge Management in Bioinformatics

Humboldt University of Berlin

Hi!

My name is Samuele Garda, but I go by Sam.

I am a Ph.D. candidate in the group Knowledge Managment in Bioinformatics lead by Prof. Ulf Leser at the Humboldt University of Berlin (Germany).

Before starting my Ph.D. I obtained a M. Sc. in Cognitive Systems, an interdisciplinary program covering both computational linguistics and machine learning,
at the University of Potsdam (Germany) and a B. A. in Philosophy, with a minor in Linguistics, at the University of Trento (Italy).

I am passionate about Natural Language Processing in general, with a specific interest in knowledge-intensive tasks,
i.e. those requiring grounding to real-world knowledge (e.g. document retrieval).

My work primarily focuses on methods for the extraction of structured information from the scientific literature.
The aim is to accelerate the integration of new knowledge into resources crucial for biomedical research, e.g. personalized cancer treatment.

My research is funded through the research unit Beyond the Exome, whose aim is to investigate the disease potential of non-coding DNA variants in rare genetic diseases.
I am also associated to CompCancer, a research training group specialised in computational aspects of cancer research.
