the ultimate meeting 2003 report by rob
fire in the hole
saturday:
alright, time to write my short report about tum03. saturday in the morning (half past three as always) i had to get
up. train-station was berlin zoologischer garten (as always) where i met crest (also as always). after the train arrived,
we had to search for the polish party-division (not as always ;-). after running through half of the train, i found
them on the upper deck. namely there had been emilka and ewa (i hope i wrote your names correctly!?), their boyfriends
silentriot + flapjack and cdbeavis (all madwizards). after a short hello i tried to get some more sleep. in magdeburg
we had to change trains. same in sangerhausen. from there to the next station was for sure the worst part, coz
the train filled up quickly with people _before_ we got in. so no chance for a seat for about two hours and
standing in the overcrowded small area at the doors. anyway, from frankfurt to hemsbach the first bottles of
polish vodka were emptied. after one hour we finally reached hemsbach, where a lost looking fieserwolf/metalvotze
was standing around. together we went to the partyplace - a big gym not too far away from the train-station.
the hall really had a lot of space. many seats remained free til the end of the party. but this didn't kill the
party-atmosphere. first thing we did was getting to the supermarket near the hall to buy some food and liquids.
before the opening-ceremony and the demoshow started i had some small-talks with our polish friends. seems that
i will buy new amiga-hardware in poland only. fuck the german prices. ok, the opening-ceremony again consisted of
a nice animation from weasel. in the demoshow we could see beside the usual pc-demos again some amiga-demos and
-intros. half past twelve i was tired as hell and went to one of the small sleeping-rooms, while missing ascii-
and wild-compos.
sunday:
getting up at nine, the vodka from yesterday did his last job and gave me a nice headache. water, coffee, eating -
nothing helped. so i went to bed again half past twelve, missing some more compos (4k-intros). but in the afternoon
i felt much better, able to join the poles again while killing some more vodka and ouzo. in the meantime,
music- and fun-compos were held. fun-compo number one was to pixel a picture on a sheet of paper containing
elements like bruno the nerd and some more (that i actually don't remember). in the second fun-compo, kb of farbrausch
had to be modeled with clay. wayfinder and cp of farbrausch competed against aeg/smash designs. iirc wayfinder won
with a model, that could also be used for a marilyn-manson-look-alike-contest ;-). the last fun-compo was the
demo-dancing. the contenders had to follow the steps (given on the bigscreen) on a dancing-pad while having
run some demos in the background. the demos were "vip2", "pornonoise" and "fr025".
warp was unbeatable. none of the others (vickey, fashion, kb, poti, chaos) could compete. but it was fun anyway.
the rest of the time til the last compos i tried to drink as much non-alcoholic stuff (mainly water and coke
of course) as possible while eating some more of the fat pizza. just for minimizing the chances of another
crappy headache ;-). before the last compos started we could also see some videos from madwizards-demos
and other stuff. slightly delayed, the pc64k-, console-, pc- and c64-demo-compos began at around midnight.
matt current released a nice demo for nokia's n-gage. for the c64-demos, there was only one serious entry
(out of three) from smash-designs. pc64k-entries were not bad at all, featuring a good looking flyby called
"point blank" from stockholm syndrome. from the pc-demos, "fr036: zeitmaschine" will most
probably win the compo. kolor's entry looked promising, but was kind of repetitive. same for the mfx-demo.
anyway, the afterparty went on without me.
monday:
because our train left at twelve, we missed the prizegiving. and again we met fieserwolf at the train-station. he
joined us til frankfurt am main. the rest of the trip wasn't thaaat interesting (hi silentriot ;-), but everything
went without delays. at around ten we arrived in berlin.
conclusion:
things are getting funnier. going together with the madwizards-posse made me seriously thinking about visiting
symphony too. about this years tum i would say that it was better than last year. a lot of space, a good beamer
from the beginning, rather fresh air (even in the sleeping-rooms), working food-support, no tech-probs, clean toilets
... . but where i agree with flapjack is the problem, that most of the time the beamer showed the same
textpages over and over. rather boring. it should be used for showing demos and animations. maybe next time ;-).
and i just hope, dalezy survived optimus ;-) ...
