evoke zoo3 report by rob
noble the world goes down (roughly translated german proverb)
friday:
this time, i was getting the way to the party alone. but that was no problem because the travel lasted not more
than an hour. the reason was that i flew to bonn two days before the party, where i visited my brother. the
party itself was located in an old fort near the river rhein in the south of cologne. the fort had some kind of
medieval touch. nice. a small disadvantage were the curved walls. they made it a bit tricky to
reach the places along the wall (at least as long as you are not dwarf-sized). when i arrived in the early evening
the partyhall was rather crowded yet. crest and the guys from sac (ferrex and spectrum) + nordbourgh were already there
and occupied perhaps not the best place to reach, but the one with a comfy sofa in the back ;-). shortly after i met elend
and paralax (both speckdrumm). together we checked out the next available supermarket and elend was showing us the
local food-suppliers (pizza, döner etc.). food-support at the partyplace was non-existing - except the free coffee
at saturday and sunday. in the late evening (after everybody could finally pay her/his entry-fee of 20 euro) i organized
a pizza. i mean, what's more relaxing than having a pizza and a beer while watching crest's demoshow ;-)? it was a bit
delayed. but who cares when you can even watch some amiga-demos (running pretty well with winuae!) on the bigscreen?
apropos amiga: shortly before the show i found the only guy with an amiga at the party. it had no ppc and the harddisk
was a bit small, but an a1200 equipped with ethernet, 060+64mb, scandoubler and a tft-display is the thing i still want to
have too. it just rules. after the show (running about two hours) i was ready for some sleep. this time there was nearly
no place for it in the partyhall. and for the "sleeping-hall" - guess what. so i placed myself in the small room
before the partyhall. it could have been worse ;-).
saturday:
i woke up as one of the first and started the day with walking around the partyplace. there i found people sleeping in
the surrounding park and on the roof of the fort (the roof itself mainly consisted of two large platforms). a bit later
i went to the supermarket and bought some food. around one o'clock pm the first compos started. the amiga-ascii-compo was
followed by the pc-ascii/ansi-compo. later on we could enjoy the raytrayced-, pixel-, 4ch-, multichannel- and ogg-compo.
in the evening the 4k-, 64k-, console- and wild-compos took place. the demo-compo was delayed for a (long) while (if i
remember correct, some wellknown group kicked the deadline's ass ;-). the releases itself were mainly of average or good
quality. jaw-dropper number one was for sure the wild-entry "egon & dönci" from aenima. i guess, no
one had expected something like this. but be warned: with about 650mb it is one of the most byte-consuming
wild-demos ever (update: you can find cut-down-versions with about 140mb and 40mb in size on
scene.org).
my favourite demo-entry was tpolm's "ninja in a box". very stylish. but i don't understand, how smash-designs
"weltenkonstrukt" could win?!? it's just that the whole demo is a looong 3d-flyby. if you have ever seen
the beginning of their tum02-entry "darkstar", then you won't see much new in their
actual release. mmh, don't want to talk about the other releases. just check out pouet
and scene.org for comments and downloads.
sunday:
this night i slept on the roof, too. again i woke up pretty early. at this time only some organizers and very few other
sceners were awake. time to get some coffee and read reports from older parties. after hours life came back to the
partyhall. and again some time later, the fast-music-compo was held. this time the voting was done live. to win, you
had to make a remix of the official party-song. scamp/vacuum did it. the following prizegiving took some time, but who cares?
cubalid7 got the prize for the most promising newcomer-group. the winner of the 64k- and demo-compo got nice pcs from
intel, the others got money, hardware, software, t-shirts and mindcandy-dvds. the trip back to bonn i made
together with cryo and twy (their intro ranked 4th in 4k-compo). greetings to them. and that's how evoke zoo3 ended for me.
conclusion:
a nice party like the other two i had visited 'til now. thumbs down only for the bad air in the hall most of the time.
thumbs up for everything else :-).
