Humboldt-University at Berlin, Institute of Informatics
Again?
Would you recommend going abroad for part of your university career?
Oh yes, definitely. It's generally great fun. You meet people from everywhere
around the world, you see another country. If you have never left home before, it
is a crash course in living on your own and fitting into new situations.
Would you recommend going to England?
I don't want to add to clichés, but the food is bad. But well, it was mass
produced, cheap food for halls of residence, and not exactly typical of what you
get elsewhere. Just prepare for lots of chips.
Well, England's fine. If you like to see countryside, go to the north, the south
is somewhat dull in this respect.
But England is so near, wouldn't America be much more of an experience?
Not sure. But I now know England better than I know Germany, which showed me that
I should look around it for a little more. And likewise for Europe, perhaps. So
England is a natural first choice. America is spectacular. That is, when you
really get to see it. Well I will do that at a later time.
Bradford? Do you think it's worth a thought?
Yes, it is. The atmosphere at the university is great, the city is not too ugly,
you get to see lots and lots of nature, if you're in for it. Nightlife is
acceptable (though Manchester is much better for gay people, I was told). Living
is supposed to be relatively cheap, although right now I can't check that out, the
pound is so incredibly strong. York, Leeds, Manchester are near. And: The best
curry in the UK. Probably in Europe.
Would you choose Bradford again, now that you know it?
I would. Well, with the knowledge I have now I know that my decision was perfectly
alright, and I don't regret anything. (For, of course, now that I know it I
wouldn't choose it a second time, but try something new.)
